Rural Broadband I
INternet via Satellite for Promoting Inclusion of Rural Economies (INSPIRE)
Avanti was funded by the European Space Agency to demonstrate the scalability of satellite broadband services based on the DVB-RCS standard. The project utilised the latest broadband access technologies to provide ubiquitous coverage over parts of Europe and allowed Avanti to understand the performance of the technology, the logistics associated with network deployment, network management tools and back office functions.
The project included an extensive trial involving over two thousand homes in the UK and led to the commercial deployment of services in Scotland and Northern Ireland and ultimately the procurement of Avanti's first satellite, HYLAS1.
